This may be partly due to the fact that the game was released a few months before the release of the PS4.
According to VGChartz, out of all the GoW games released on console (not including collections) Ascension sold the worst. God of War: Ascension’s overall performance may have turned Santa Monica Studio off to the idea of doing multiplayer again. The more mechanically interesting gameplay style from Ragnarok may have helped Ascension’s multiplayer, but the title did suffer from other issues. Players would need to plan each attack carefully and outsmart their opponents while utilizing any abilities at their disposal. If it were implemented in multiplayer, users could expect battles to be similar to Ubisoft’s For Honor franchise. 2018's God of War and Ragnarok moved away from the franchise’s traditional hack-and-slash elements to make its gameplay more methodical with less button mashing. It's a style that fans have been accustomed to for years, but it may not have been the best choice when trying to break out a new, unique multiplayer experience. When God of War: Ascension was released in 2013, it was the sixth GoW title to feature its trademark hack-and-slash gameplay. After a long hiatus, fans welcomed Kratos back in 2018's God of War, which had players control the Ghost of Sparta in a brand-new way.
